Air Brush Makeup vs Traditional Makeup: a Beauty Showdown !

When you are getting ready for a special occasion, you might be interested in finding ways to do your makeup a little differently than the “same old, same old” everyday look. Considering air brush makeup vs traditional makeup is one way you can change up your beauty routine and get a glowing, dewy look for your prom, wedding or other special event. Here’s a makeup artist’s perspective on the difference between the two, so you can have a solid base of understanding before you make your ultimate decision to make a switch.

Debunking Some Myths

Since air brush makeup tends to feel like something that only makeup artists do, individuals may have some mistaken expectations when it comes to this form of application, such as:

  • Airbrushing provides a flawless finish.
If you are expecting that an air brush makeup vs traditional makeup application will provide a flawless, perfect finish for every type of face, then you are sadly mistaken. While air brush makeup does provide an incredibly even finish when properly applied, it may not give you the full coverage that you’re used to with a liquid or even powder traditional foundation.
  • Airbrushing will cover small to not-so-small skin imperfections.
Air brush makeup is quite a bit thinner than traditional liquid foundation, so if you have problem skin then it’s probably not going to be your best option. That said, a skilled makeup artist may start you with a full face of “traditional” concealer and foundation and then lay air brush foundation over the top to finalize and set the look.
  • Airbrushing makes your makeup waterproof.
Who even knows where this myth came from! Air brush vs traditional makeup is no more nor less waterproof; although airbrushed makeup can last longer due to the light application technique and lowered likelihood that it is dislodged by sweat.

Pros of Air Brush Makeup

If you’re in a situation where you’re dealing with either children or those with near-flawless skin with few imperfections, air brushing is a very viable alternative to create a long-lasting, clean and smooth-feeling application that won’t get all gunky feeling. The fine mist of particles can be great for scattering light for a photo or video shoot as well.

Pros of Traditional Makeup

Traditional makeup really helps even out skin tones and when paired with a heavy concealer can cover nearly any kind of imperfection—especially in the hands of a talented makeup artist. Traditional makeup tends to be a more precise alternative to airbrush makeup as well.

When you’re considering air brush vs traditional makeup, you really have to keep in mind the various skin types, the skill of the person doing the application as well as the application reason before you make a decision. Air brush makeup is certainly fun to play with, but many people choose traditional makeup for everyday use due to the simplicity. Contact Us to learn more about the beauty of air brush makeup.

Keeping your hair healthy and happy is of the utmost importance, and learning how to protect your hair while using hot tools such as flat irons and curling irons is something that everyone can learn. Overusing these hot tools can leave your hair looking dull, listless and ultimately brittle—all things that you want to avoid at all costs. However, you need hot styling tools in order to achieve the style or design that you want. Learning how to balance the style and the hot tools can take a little practice, but follow these simple tips and you’ll be well on the way to having your gorgeous style and healthy hair at the same time.

Use Hot Tools Sparingly
Figuring out how to protect your hair while using hot tools such as a flat iron or curling iron means you may not be able to have that perfectly straight (or curly!) ‘do every single day. In fact, you might want to save them for special occasions, or only a few times per week. The more often you apply hot tools to your tresses, the more likely you are to be causing permanent damage that can be difficult if not impossible to counteract. Keeping your blow-drying to 3-5 times per week and your flat iron use to once or twice will go a long way towards limiting the havoc that you’re wreaking on your hair.

Choose Professional Tools
Ceramic or tourmaline tools, while a little more expensive, will go a long way towards protecting your hair when you’re using a curling iron or a flat iron. The reason for this is that you don’t have to hold your hair in place nearly as long, due to the higher temperatures that these professional tools reach. Plus, you’re less likely to suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome from holding up a heavy or poorly-designed styling product for long periods of time.

Keep Protection in Place
Adding a heat protect ant to your styling schedule can help you protect your hair from hot tools such as a curling iron or flat iron. You don’t have to coat your entire head—just a little on the ends of your hair can keep it from breaking off or damaging the ends, which can cause frizz.

When you look at how to protect your hair from hot tools such as a curling iron or flat iron, you should consider the entire life cycle: how to protect your hair before you curl or straighten, keeping your styling to a minimum each week, and also selecting styling solutions that are of the highest grade and that will allow you to apply heat for a shorter period of time. When you need styling products and help with your hairstyle, Contact Us   ,Happy styling!

Getting a facial can be a real treat. The look and feel of your face after this kind of treatment is unlike anything else, and many women count down the days until they can enjoy the refreshed feeling provided by a good facial. But how often does your face need a facial? There is the potential of having too much of a good thing, so you need to be smart about how frequently you schedule a professional facial service.
Generally speaking, you should be able to have a facial approximately once per month. At that level of frequency, you will be giving your skin time to recover from the treatment and reach the point where it again can benefit from what a facial has to offer. If you get another facial in just a couple of weeks, you likely won’t glean much benefit from the work, so you will just be wasting money. On the other hand, if you wait too much longer, your skin will have fallen into a less-than-ideal condition and it may take some work to recover it back to its previous quality.
Everyone is Different
One of the complicating factors on this point is the fact that everyone is a little bit different, so there is no one specific schedule that all can follow. Some people will find they achieve great results following a monthly plan, while others will need to make adjustments based on their results. For instance, if you fight acne, you might want to have more frequent facials in order to keep your skin as clean as possible. Respond to your body and let it tell you exactly how often you should come in for a facial treatment.
Work with a Professional
The best way to settle on a plan for your skin care is to work with a qualified professional who can make recommendations based on your personal needs. We have just those kind of qualified professionals working here at Hair Designer’s Studio. Instead of trying to make these choices on your own, come in and discuss a treatment plan with our team. Once you settle on a schedule, you can simply come in for your appointment at set intervals to have your face treated correctly. You just might be surprised at how great your skin can look when it is cared for by a pro at Hair Designer’s Studio.
Of course, as you would expect from a full service salon, there is more than just facials available from Hair Designer’s Studio. Now that you know how often your face needs a facial, you can think about other salon care as well. We also offer a variety of services such as hair color, manicures, makeup, and much more. If you are interested in setting up your first appointment, please feel free to give us a call at your convenience. We have a professional team that works here in our studio, and we would love the chance to work with you soon. Whether you want to have a facial treatment or anything else that we have to offer, it all starts with a quick phone call. Thank you for stopping by!

The waxing vs. shaving debate is one that anyone who removes body hair on a regular basis knows well. It’s probably safe to say that most of us learned to shave the first time we wanted to remove body hair. If you’ve ever cut yourself with a razor or experienced that itchy razor burn, you’ve probably wondered if waxing is better. Many people stay away from waxing because it seems more painful than shaving, or more expensive, or more time consuming. The truth is that none of these things are true.

The Case for Shaving

To make a decision in the old waxing vs. shaving debate, let’s start by looking at shaving. It’s one of the most popular methods of hair removal for both women and men. In addition to being probably the first method you learned, it’s relatively pain-free as long as you are careful to not cut yourself. You can do it almost anywhere that you have access to water, and razors are usually pretty inexpensive. Especially if you buy an electric razor and maintain it properly, you won’t have to spend a dime again for quite some time.

On the other hand, shaving can cause ingrown hairs and itchy rashes if done incorrectly. Because shaving only removes the top of the hair, rather than the entire hair follicle, the growth that you’ll see directly after shaving will be thicker and darker than what you shaved off. You also have to make sure that you use some kind of moisturizer or gel to keep your skin from developing razor burn.

The Case for Waxing

Waxing, on the other hand, removes the hair completely down to the root. When you are considering waxing vs. shaving, the idea that your hair will actually grow back lighter and thinner than before is a clear point in favor of waxing. Waxed skin stays smoother longer, and if done correctly with the right products, you shouldn’t experience much pain. Frequent waxers will probably not notice any pain at all after a few times.

The cons of waxing include having to be careful that you use wax that works for your skin. If you have sensitive skin or are prone to rashes, you might have to look for an all-natural product before you can wax. Waxing can be time consuming in the beginning, but once your hair has started to grow in thinner, it should take less time. Inexperienced use can leave burns, so you have to watch the heat of the wax.

Verdict?

The verdict is, much like any other beauty routine, you should choose the method that works best for you. You may find the convenience and lower expense of shaving to be the best option, or you may prefer the long-lasting results of a good wax. The potential for pain or injury is about the same on either side, and both give you an immediate result of perfectly smooth body parts. Here at our salon in Santa Monica, we are always ready to help you try out your first wax so you can experience both hair removal types to help you decide on your preference. Either way, no one who sees your smooth, summer-ready legs is going to know which side you chose in the battle of waxing vs. shaving.

Manicures and Pedicures – How Often is Just Right?

Making sure that your nails look great – both fingernails and toenails – is an important part of overall beauty. You certainly want to give them the attention they deserve, but can you go too far by giving them too much treatment? How do you know when it is time to head to the salon for professional help, as opposed to simply touching them up at home? You will need to have answers to these questions if you want your nails to look great as often as possible.

How much do you use your hands?

It might be obvious, but there is a direct connection between how much you use your hands and how often you need to have your fingernails cared for by a professional. If you are frequently working with your hands, your fingernails are going to get chipped and cracked for more often than someone who works at a desk, for example. For people who are particularly busy with their hands, it might even be necessary to have a professional manicure once per week – or every two weeks at the most.

The story is similar when it comes to your feet. If you protect your toes inside socks and shoes on most days, your toenails probably won’t wear out too quickly. On the other hand, if you are frequently barefoot or wearing sandals, your toenails could become beat up almost as fast as your fingernails. Again, a frequency of between one and two weeks is going to be appropriate for people who leave their feet exposed on a regular basis.

Do you do any work on your nails at home?

Another factor in this equation is whether or not you care for your nails on your own while at home. People who apply a protective coat to their nails from time to time may be able to stretch out their manicures and pedicures longer than those who don’t. Of course, this kind of at home care is not a substitute for a professional manicure or pedicure, but it can help to keep your nails looking good for an extra week or two.

Talk to the Pros

The only way to come up with an appropriate plan for your own nails is to speak with a professional such as those who work here at Hair Designer’s Studio. Our team would be happy to work with you directly to discuss your needs and develop a plan that is suitable to keep your nails looking their best on a regular basis. Based on your lifestyle, appearance preferences, and more, we can help you decide on a frequency for your manicure and pedicure needs.

Of course, the team at Hair Designer’s Studio does far more than just nails. In addition to our manicure and pedicure services, we also offer a classic European facial, makeup service, blow drying, and much more. Give us a call today to find out more about our services, or to schedule your appointment. We are looking forward to working with you soon!

At Hair Designer’s Studio, we know how important your hair is to you. Of course you want it to look great by using the latest styles and colors, but there is one thing that has to be taken care of before you can even think about styling – the health of your hair. If the condition of your hair isn’t what it should be, it won’t matter what kind of style you use, because the finished product will always fall short of your desires.
To maintain healthy hair, consider following the simple pieces of advice below.

Heat Can Hurt

While you might think that your hair dryer is your best friend while you are getting ready each morning, that heat that you apply to your hair may be doing more harm than good. If you crank the hair dryer all the way up to the hottest setting and blast away, you could be damaging the condition of your individual hair strands. Try using your hair dryer on a lower setting to accomplish the goal of drying your hair without all of the unnecessary damage.

Relax!

Believe it or not, stress can do bad things to your hair. If you are constantly feeling stressed out or overwhelmed, those emotions may eventually show up in the form of dull hair. To avoid that fate, work on taking some of the stress out of your life. Of course, reducing your stress is good for you in general, so this tip is something that should be near the top of your priority list.

Be Patient

It is easy to break your hair strands when they are wet, so take a little bit of time to allow your hair to dry before you go after it with the brush. You don’t have to wait until every single strand is dry to the touch, but combing hair that is completely soaked is simply asking for trouble in the way of broken strands.

Get Your Protein

Protein is what allows your hair to grow and thrive, so make sure you are getting enough protein in your diet on a regular basis. If you are active you will need even more protein than the average person, so make sure to keep up on this dietary point if you want to keep your hair looking great.

Don’t Go Too Tight

Depending on the style that you pick out for your hair, you might be tempted to pull it really tight when it is wound into a bun or braid. However, that tension is bad for the condition of your hair in the long run. Try to use looser styles most of the time so that you can avoid the damage caused by pulling so tight.
If you are looking for a great new hairstyle, or you simply need to refresh your current look, please feel free to contact us at Hair Designer’s Studio today. We offer blow drying, flat ironing, keratin treatments, and much, much more. Give us a call today to schedule your first appointment!

At Hair Designer’s Studio, we have been incredibly fortunate to be in business for 28 wonderful years right here in Santa Monica. Established in 1987, we have been able to develop a loyal following of wonderful clients over nearly three decades. Not only do we get to do what we love every single day, we also get to do it in one of the best locations in the entire country. To say we are proud of what we have created at the Hair Designer’s Studio would be a serious understatement.
One of the big keys to our success has been our excellent location, in the beautiful Landmark district of Santa Monica. We are the longest continuing business in the Landmark building, and we have persevered through many restoration project through the years. Most notably, our business survived the 1994 earthquake and the two-year reconstruction project that followed. While other businesses have come and gone over time, Hair Designer’s Studio has been a constant presence within the community. The relationships we have built in and around our location are extremely valuable to us on a personal level.
It’s All About You
Our customers are the single most important thing about Hair Designer’s Studio. Quite simply, without our great clients, we would not have been able to do what we love for almost thirty years. When you choose Hair Designer’s Studio to be your salon of choice, we want you to feel as if you are seeing a member of your own family.

There is nothing boring about the looks that we offer at HDS. As time goes by, your skin naturally regenerates so that new skin cells can replace the old, dead ones. This is a process that goes on throughout your life, but it isn’t always as fast or efficient as we would like. In order to help your body bring the new, healthy skin cells to the service, a treatment called a facial peel can be used. Most professional salons, including Hair Designer’s Studio in Santa Monica, offer this service. Since there are chemicals at work in this process, a facial peel is something that should only be done by a qualified professional.
There are a number of reasons why you should head to a professional salon when looking for a facial peel to get dead skin off of your face. One of those reasons is the experience of the person who will be completing the treatment. Experience is important when it comes to a facial peel because each patient needs to be analyzed and treated uniquely. Using the same exact treatment on each and every customer is not going to be a successful formula. A talented professional will understand that each person needs a specific plan that is customized to meet their needs. When you come to Hair Designer’s Studio for a facial peel, you will be able to enjoy quality service that results in your skin looking fresh and radiant once again.
You Might Need to Prepare
Keep in mind that, prior to having a facial peel, you may need to prepare your skin for a period of time in order to be ready for the treatment. If you are considering having a facial peel treatment completed on your skin, contact your salon to discuss the process and ask if you will need to follow any specific skin care plan prior to receiving the treatment. Also, after the peel is finished, you will probably be asked to follow a treatment plan at home to achieve the best possible results from the process.
Allow for Healing Time
While a facial peel is a great option for many individuals, it is not a treatment that offers instant results. Instead, you are going to have to allow for a short period of healing before you really start to see the benefits of the work that was done. If you only need a light peel, the healing time for your skin may be only a day or two. However, for a deep peel, it can take as long as a couple of weeks or more before your skin starts to look its best. It is possible that you will need to complete multiple peels over an extended period of time before getting the results that you desire.
Specifically Important in Southern California
If you spend extended periods of time outside underneath the California sun, you may have experienced sun damage to the skin on your face. While you are far from alone in experiencing this kind of damage while living in Southern California, it is still a problem that you will likely want to solve. A facial peel to get rid of dead skin off your face is a great way to reverse some of the damage that has been done by the sun over the years. Of course, beyond a facial peel or any other salon treatment, you should always protect your skin before spending long periods of time in the sun.
For professional facial peel service, please contact Hair Designer’s Studio right away. We have provided this treatment for many customers in our Santa Monica salon, and we would be happy to do the same for you. In addition to facial peels, we also offer classic European facials, pedicures, hair extensions, and much more. Contact us today to make your first appointment!

The sun always shines in Southern California. Okay – so it doesn’t always shine, but it certainly feels that way to the millions of residents who call this area home. One of the many reasons that so many people continue to live in the greater Southern California area is the incredible weather which occupies the region throughout the year. Temperatures tend to be warm but not hot, and the blue sky is nearly a constant. For those who love to live outside, it is hard to think of a better home than So. Cal.
Of course, along with that outdoor lifestyle comes some unique challenges. Specifically, maintaining your physical appearance so you can head to the beach or the pool at a moment’s notice and feel great about the way you look. Nearly any day in the Los Angeles area is a day that could include a trip to the water to put on a bathing suit and enjoy the sun. If that sounds like the life you lead, regular body maintenance such as waxing is a key part of your routine.
Waxing Leads to Less Hassle
You can certainly try to maintain your body hair by shaving, but that is a chore that very few people want to keep up with on a regular basis. Shaving will only provide you with a hair-free skin surface for a few days, at the most. Unless you are willing to repeatedly shave your body more than once a week, waxing is going to be a far more-attractive option. With waxing, you can usually expect the skin to remain hair free for anywhere from two to eight weeks. Instead of having to reach for a razor every few days, you can have a waxing service completed and then forget about it for up to two full months.
It’s Not as Painful as You Might Think
Most people associate waxing with a painful experience. While it is true that there can be some minor pain associated with using waxing for hair removal, it isn’t nearly as bad as you might have been led to believe. The key is having the work completed by a talented and experienced professional such as those here at Hair Designer’s Studio. When you trust a knowledgeable professional to handle your waxing job, you can expect to receive the best possible results while minimizing discomfort at the same time.
Avoid Shaving Side Effects
If you are used to shaving your legs and other parts of your body, you are familiar with the frustrating side effects that you can experience. Specifically, little nicks and cuts along the surface of your skin are a reality for many people when shaving their body. Not only are these little cuts painful, they also are unsightly when the time comes to put on your bathing suit and head out to the beach. The whole point of hair removal is to look your best, and you aren’t going to reach that goal if you are small scrapes and cuts all over your body. Waxing will avoid this outcome so you can feel confident that your skin looks great.
When you are ready for a waxing treatment at a professional salon, contact Hair Designer’s Studio right away. In addition to our waxing service, we also offer acne treatment, microdermabrasion, manicures, and much more. Three Tips for Picking the Right Men’s Hair Cuts
Sometimes you have a very clear idea of what you want to do with your hair, and all you need to do is tell the stylist exactly what you are looking for in order to bring it to life. If that is the case for you right now – great! Simply make your appointment in our salon and tell the stylist which hairstyle you are going for. However, that might not be the case. Sometimes, you just can’t decide what hairstyle to go with, or which style will work best for you. Of course our team will be happy to make suggestions based on your personal style and look, but you may wish to develop your own ideas before you come in to the salon.
In order to help you work through the decision making process and wind up with the right men’s hair cut for you, try using the following three tips.
Tip #1 – Think About Your Lifestyle
You want your hair cut to accommodate your lifestyle as perfectly as possible, since you have to live with it on a day in, day out basis. Some men’s hair cuts will work better for certain people than others, so you are going to need to think about your daily routine and what kind of a hairstyle will work best for you. Do you have a lot of time to get ready in the morning, or are you always running out the door in a hurry? Do you enjoy spending time in front of the mirror styling your hair, or do you prefer to just get out of the shower and have it already looking good? These are just a couple of the questions you need to ask yourself when picking from the various men’s hair cuts that we have to offer.
Tip #2 – Match Your Personality
Certain hairstyles are associated by most people with specific personality types. For example, men who wear their hair long are usually thought to be more free-spirited and laid back than those who prefer a short cut. Now of course, these are just stereotypes and you are free to break the mold by going with any style that you happen to like – regardless of your personality type or the expectations that others may have of you. Go with the men’s hair cut that you feel most comfortable living with on a daily basis and take pride in how you look.
Tip #3 – Keep It Fresh
When in doubt, go with a new look just for a change of pace and to avoid getting stuck in the same look for years on end. Sometimes a new haircut can be all it takes to give you a renewed energy and excitement for life on a daily basis. We all know how busy and hectic life in Southern California can be, so you need to have energy and motivation constantly in order to keep up. While you might not think a new-look hair cut can offer you all that, give it a try and you just might be surprised.
When you are ready to go ahead with your next men’s hair cut style, contact us here at Hair Designer’s Studio to schedule your appointment. You can come ready to tell your stylist exactly what you want, or come in with an open mind and work with your stylist to make a decision – it is totally up to you. Beyond our hair cut service, we also offer facials, manicures, hair color, and much more. Thank you for taking the time to visit our blog, and we hope to see you in our Santa Monica salon soon!
